If you have pets, you know that they quickly become part of your family and you would do anything to keep them safe and happy. Sometimes there are things in your home or garden that can harm your furry friends and that’s when the tree removal in Darwin services that we offer at Ben’s Tree Service come in handy. Certain trees can be dangerous for pets and you need to get rid of them. We can help safely extract and dispose of them so your pets are always safe. Here are some to think about getting rid of.
Stone Fruit Trees
You might really love having a fruit tree in your garden. After all, it’s wonderful to have fresh fruit right at your fingertips. However, some such trees can be toxic to your pet. That’s because they contain gallotannin and cyanogenic glycosides. These are chemicals that can cause dilated pupils, difficulty breathing, shock and even death. They are present in the leaves, twigs, seeds and stems of apricot, cherry, plum and peach trees.
Red Maple Trees
This species of tree grows well in Australia but might not be safe for your pet. Experts aren’t sure what it is that can be so toxic, but if the leaves are ingested by horses, dogs or cats, it impairs their red blood cell function, which can lead to stomach pain, darkened body membranes, discoloured urine, lack of appetite and lethargy. Red maples can also be deadly so it’s best to get rid of them.
Black Walnut Trees
While not as common in Australia, it still pays to be sure your garden doesn’t contain a black walnut tree. That’s because it’s a tree that commonly grows mould. Mould that grows on the nuts of the tree can be deadly to some pets, including dogs and horses. Ingesting the mould can lead to depression, anorexia, oedema, increased heart rate, increased respiration, mild colic and an increase of body temperature.
The sago palm is highly toxic to dogs but may cause harm to other pets as well. If your dog eats any part of the tree, it can lead to bloody diarrhea, vomiting, blood disorders, liver failure and death. No part of the tree is safe to have if you have pets, but the seeds contain the highest level of toxicity so check your yard for them often if any of your neighbours have a sago palm tree.
